The XVII Cubadisco International Fair will take place in La Habana from the 18th to the 26th of May, 2013. It will be aimed at young people, concert music lovers and all those who enjoy violin in all its classical, traditional and popular forms.
Violin is present in most Cuban musical genres. It is also crucial in classical music arrangements, such as symphonic orchestras, chamber groups and solo performers. Finally, violin has ventured into traditional and popular music, leaving its print on the likes of jazz and charanga.
For Cubadisco 2013 an orchestra of over a hundred violins will be formed that will bring together several generations of Cuban musicians. The event will also pay homage to a number of Cuban violin performers who signify the essential contribution of the instrument to the diverse genres they enriched: Evelio Tieles, Alfredo Muñoz, Enrique Álvarez, Celso (Aragón) and Dagoberto González, among others.
As it happens every year, we will be having almost a hundred concerts with local and foreign artists, among which there will be a memorable encounter between Aragón Orchestra and Original from Manzanillo Orchestra. There will also be performances of the most leading dance collectives in the country. They will all be celebrating, among other things, more than four decades of Van Van. There will be young jazz musicians, rappers, rockers and rumberos, as well as the fusion of different kinds of music and other arts. Artists who have been nominated for or awarded a prize at the event will also take part in this musical collaboration.
The festival will prioritize the young throughout its extensive program. The presence of well-known international artists will be an extra draw for the public. In addition, we will be having the usual prize ceremony, press meetings, National Symphonic Orchestra concerts, children’s activities, jam sessions, traditional peasant music, Afro-Cuban dance and percussion workshops and the renowned International Symposium for discussion of topics related to the cultural industry.
Also showing will be the Cuba Gala: Music-Fashion –an opportunity to mix the most modern ideas of fashion and jazz. This gala will forge a link between the different genres of Cuban music, in keeping with the three guiding principles of the event: Music, Image and Sound.
Ecuador as a guest of honor country represents a distinction to Cubadisco. Since many years renown Ecuadorian artists participate in this event, showing us their culture mainly folk and traditional genres reaffirming its richness and cultural identity.
Ecuadorian specialists and artists have also participated while organizing the Alba Record Net and its award.
Certainly this country will give a special magnificence to this event.
We look forward to welcoming you to this great celebration of Cuban music and culture.
